Barber has been a member of the Gallaudet University athletics department for the past five years serving as the men’s basketball coach and NCAA Compliance Officer. In May 2012, Barber transitioned over to the newly formed Game Management/Assistant Sports Information Director position while continuing his duties as the department’s compliance officer.
Barber accumulated a 50-76 record in five seasons guiding the men's basketball program. Gallaudet joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) two years ago and during that span the Bison have posted an overall winning record of 28-24 and a 20-12 mark in conference play. In over 105 years Gallaudet has only had a 10-win season 16 times, under Barber this feat occurred three times.
In 2010-11, the Bison had their first winning season since and reached the NEAC semifinals where GU lost 96-91 to Penn St.-Harrisburg in overtime. Gallaudet made its first postseason appearance in school history when it was selected to participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South tournament. The Bison made the short trip across town to face Catholic University of America in the quarterfinals where GU came up short 66-58. Gallaudet finished the year with a 17-11 record, the 17 wins are the most in program history dating back to 1904. The winning record was only the fifth in the past 25 years at Gallaudet.
Barber coached five All-NEAC honorees including two first-team selections in Layton Seeber (2010-11) and Brandon McMillan (2011-12) in two seasons. While in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) one Bison earned All-CAC honors during the 2008-09 season when Sekoe White was selected to the second team.
Barber came to Gallaudet from Villa Julie College (currently Stevenson University), where he was the Assistant Athletic Director, Sports Information Director, Head Coach of Men's Tennis and Head Assistant Coach of Men's Basketball. Barber is also an alumnus of Villa Julie College, where he majored in Interdisciplinary Studies: Education and Psychology, in 2001. He then earned his Master's Degree from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) where he majored in Exercise Science and Athletic Administration in 2005.
Barber joined the Villa Julie athletics staff after graduating from VJC. He was the Head Basketball Assistant for six years under Adams. His basketball duties included being the chief recruiter as well as planning and execution of day-to-day practices. He was an integral part of taking a team that was 7-18 the year before he joined the coaching staff, to a team that went 58-27 over the final three years of his tenure. Under his assistance the Mustangs earned an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament in 2006, and an automatic berth after winning the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2007. In 2006, the Mustangs made it to the round of 32 after they defeated the No. 1 seed in the pod Baruch College on its home court, before they fell to William Paterson University. The two NCAA tournament appearances were the first in the school's history for men's basketball.
Barber resides in Mechanicsville, Md., and is the proud father of three children; daughters Cali and Peyton and his son Carson.
