Gallaudet University athletics places fourth overall in 2010-11 NEAC President's Cup standings

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – In its first year in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) the Gallaudet University athletics program finished fourth overall in the final President’s Cup standings out of 11 programs announced Sunday by NEAC Commissioner Candice Poiss Murray at the annual conference retreat.

The Bison finished third overall in the women’s standings and was fourth in the men’s standings. GU fields five teams that compete on the women’s side (basketball, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball) and four on the men’s side (baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming). The NEAC President’s Cup standings for men’s, women’s and overall are determined by percentage and not total points earned because some schools don’t support all 16 sports sponsored by the conference.

"I want to congratulate all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for a wonderful 2010-11 season," said Gallaudet University Director of Athletics Michael Weinstock. "We made a great showing in our first season in the NEAC. There is room for growth for all sports and we hope to increase our totals next season."

Gallaudet had an overall percentage of 64.19 percent as the Bison tallied 47.5 points out of a possible 74. The Bison women’s programs accumulated 29 points out of a possible 41 (70.70 percent) as they finished third behind Penn St.-Berks (72.50). On the men’s side, Gallaudet totaled 18.5 points out of a possible 33 (56.1 percent).

SUNYIT repeated as the overall and men’s winners this year as the Wildcats had a 73.27 overall percentage to edged Penn St.-Harrisburg (70.59) and Keuka College (66.67) in the final overall standings. Keuka won the women’s standings trophy with a 91.5 percent.

The Bison won a share of the 2010-11 NEAC regular-season title in women’s basketball and volleyball (South Division) and swept the men’s and women’s swimming championships. GU’s baseball (5.5 points) and men’s basketball (seven points) made the postseason on the men’s side while softball (2.5 points) made the postseason on the women’s side.
