Gallaudet University ranked in Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings for first time in four years
CLEVELAND – Gallaudet University made its return to the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, presented by National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA), as the final 2010-11 Division III standings were released at NACDA’s 46th Annual Convention in Orlando, Fla., on Friday. The Bison earned 60.67 points to finish 228th out of 324 schools that received points from making a NCAA tournament or championship appearance.
Gallaudet’s point total is the second best in school history while its finish is fourth best. The highest GU has ever placed in the Directors’ Cup standings is 155th in 1998-99 but that year only 231 schools were ranked and the Bison accumulated 30 points. The program record for points is 64, which was earned the last time the Bison were ranked in 2006-07. The point structure has changed over the years due to the expansion of NCAA tournament brackets.
The Bison have only made the final standings seven times in the 16-year history of the NCAA Division III Directors’ Cup standings. Williams (Mass.) College won its 13th straight title, 15th overall, with 1,147 points this past season.
This past season the Bison had two teams, volleyball and women’s basketball, make their respective NCAA tournaments to earn 25 points each. Sophomore jumper Darius Flowers finished sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships to earn 10.67 points to give GU 60.67 points. The last time Gallaudet had both its volleyball and women’s basketball teams make the NCAA tournament in the same season came in 1996-97.
Gallaudet is the second highest ranked team from the North Eastern Athletic Conference as Keuka College finished 157th overall with 114 points. Three other NEAC schools made the final standings including Penn St.-Harrisburg (275th/28 points), SUNYIT (276th/25 points) and Wells College (276th/25 points). This was Gallaudet’s first season as a member of the NEAC.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women’s and nine men’s.
