Gallaudet drops conference opener to Wesley College

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Buff and Blue opened the 2008 slate at home against the Wolverines of Wesley College in conference play. The Wolverines came out on top, 12-0.

The Bison showed improved defensive play as they limited Wesley’s scoring opportunities, as the Wolverines’ highest scoring inning came in the top of the 7th when they brought in five runs. Gallaudet’s defense also forced Wesley to leave seven runners on base.

In his first collegiate baseball start, freshman Zane Noschese pitched 4 innings and struck out three batters, giving up 5 hits in the 20 batters he faced. Head coach Matt Lisle made some pitching changes to relieve his young starter, enabling Eric Smithson and Kevin Alley to see some time on the mound. Alley added two strikeouts.

First baseman Bill Jacobs had 8 put-outs, with Ryan Lentz adding 6 from behind the plate. The Bison worked together, producing 10 assists to 6 for Wesley. Both teams had 21 put-outs.

Gallaudet (0-1, 0-1 CAC) will play at home again on Sunday, February 25 against the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia. The first pitch goes out at 2:00 p.m.
