Mowl's Three in Overtime Carries Gallaudet to 71-70 Overtime Win
It took 45 minutes to settle this one, and it was even better than the memorable game these two teams played in the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament Championship on Thanksgiving Weekend. In a game that featured several lead changes in the second half and overtime, Gallaudet came out on top 71-70 thanks to a 3-pointer by Jon Mowl.
Maryland Bible had one more chance to score but their final attempt was blocked and knocked out of bounds with 0.2 seconds left and they could not get off a final shot.
The home crowd made all the difference today, firing up the Bison as they filled the bleachers and made lots of noise when Maryland Bible was on the free throw line, causing Maryland Bible to miss most of their second half and overtime free throws. Maryland Bible made just 3-11 second half free throws and was 10-20 for the game.
Gallaudet had one of their best passing games today and took smart shots most of the game, mixing up outside jumpers with strong drives from all parts of the floor, and spreading out so there was plenty of spacing for each shot Gallaudet took.
In overtime, Johnny Jackson, Jr. grabbed a big rebound off a missed shot and put it back up for two points that kept the game close. If it wasn't for this play, Maryland Bible would have pulled away.
All 5 Gallaudet starters had a big part in the win. Sekoe White scored 18 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 3 assists. Mowl scored 9 points, to go along with 3 assists and 3 steals. Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Chi Pun scored 11 points and had 2 steals. Tony Tatum scored 8 points, had 5 steals and 4 assists. This was a team effort and Gallaudet did a good job sharing the ball as no player shot the ball more than 12 times.
Maryland Bible's Terry Hosley dazzled the crowd with a wide range of shots, finishing with 30 points.
After the game, Gallaudet Head Coach Jeb Barber complimented the effort of both teams. "Maryland Bible played a great game today and deserved to win as much as we did." Gallaudet played just as hard today. "Today we showed what we are capable of doing. Our team showed how badly they wanted to win. We fought for every rebound, made nice passes, moved well without the ball, and made Maryland Bible work for every shot."
Coach Barber also had praise for the way his team stayed in the game after falling behind by double digits with less than ten minutes left in the game. "I am proud of how we came back in the second half to retake the lead. That was all about desire and sticking together as a team."
With the win, Gallaudet is 8-8. They have one day off before they face Christendom at Christendom College Monday night at 8 pm. Their next home game will be Wednesday, January 28 vs. Marymount at 8 pm.
