Gallaudet men's basketball selected to play in ECAC championship, will face Catholic on Wednesday
CENTREVILLE, Mass. – For the first time in program history a Gallaudet University men's basketball team will suit up for the postseason as the Bison were selected Monday by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) to participate in the South Region championship. Gallaudet will make the short 10-minute drive across town to Catholic University of America on Wednesday, March 2, for an 7:30 p.m. game in the first round. The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals that will take place on the campus of the higest remaining seed this weekend. The top-seed in the South Region is Lebanon Valley College while Catholic is a No. 3 seed and Gallaudet a No. 6.
Gallaudet and Catholic are two former founding members of the Capital Athletic Conference, which started in 1990. The Cardinals won seven CAC men's basketball championships before it left after the 2006-07 season for the Landmark Conference. Gallaudet is in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) for the first time this season after 20 years in the CAC.
"We are extremely excited and proud to represent Gallaudet University in the postseason for the first-time in program history," said Gallaudet Coach Jeb Barber. "As a coach to have another week with this team is special. We look forward to facing Catholic on Wednesday, hope to see a lot of Buff and Blue in the stands."
The Bison (17-10) have rewritten the record books this season as the team has posted the most wins in the history of the program that dates back to 1904. Gallaudet advanced to the NEAC semifinals where it lost a heartbreaking 96-91 contest against top-seed Penn St.-Harrisburg in overtime last Saturday. GU is led by its three all-conference honorees in first-team forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) along with third-team honorees Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) and Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio).
Catholic (19-8) lost in the conference championship game to University of Scranton 82-71 last Saturday. The Cardinals are led by two first-team honorees in senior forward Jason Banzhaf and senior guard R.J. Dixon. The Cardinals won the 2000-01 NCAA Division III men's basketball national championship.
Gallaudet and Catholic last played on February 14, 2007 at the Field House where the Cardinals won 70-52. CUA holds a 97-18 series advantage over the Bison dating back to the first meeting between the two program sin 1910-11. The last Gallaudet win in the series came on January 20, 2007, when the Bison entered the DuFour Center and walked out with a 55-51 victory.
