Jean-Pierre Kanashiro named to the All-NEAC first team
GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its 2011 men's soccer all-conference teams and Gallaudet University junior forward Jean-Pierre Kanashiro (Springfield, Va.) was named to the first team. This marks the first all-conference honor for men's soccer since Gallaudet joined the NEAC prior to the 2010 season.
Appearing in all 16 games for the Bison with 13 starts, Kanashiro led the team in goals this season with eight. He also led in shots (61) by a wide margin, and was two-for-three as he took the team's only penalty kick attempts of the year.
Kanashiro scored the game-winner in Gallaudet's 2-1 victory over Penn St.-Berks on Homecoming weekend. It was the team's second consecutive victory, first conference win, and first home win. It was also GU's first conference home win since 1997, a 14-year span. His only two-goal game came in a double overtime loss to Christendom College.
Before joining the newly formed NEAC, Gallaudet had been part of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) for 19 years. There, they had success as several GU players were named to the all-conference teams over the years. Most recently, Matt Eby was named to the CAC second team three consecutive years from 2004-06.
Kanashiro is the first GU men's soccer player to be selected to a conference first team since Jeff Lowe made the CAC first team in 1997. The only other Bison to receive first team all-conference honors was Radcliffe Price back in 1993.
Malick Faye of SUNY Institute of Technology, the regular-season NEAC champions, was voted as both NEAC Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year, after allowing only 10 goals on the season and two in conference play. The conference's inaugural Rookie of the Year honor went to Keuka College midfielder Austin Gerber, who tallied three goals and two assists. For the second consecutive year, SUNYIT head coach Peterson Jerome was honored as NEAC Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to their second straight regular-season championship.
The Bison finished the season 2-14 overall and 1-9 in NEAC play.
