GU men's swim team sets another team record, picks up fourth win
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University men’s swimming team closed out its first half of the 2010-11 season schedule with a solid 72-11 victory over Salem International (W.Va.) University at the Field House pool. The win is the fourth for the Bison (4-3) this season as the men’s swimming program aims for its first-ever winning season.
The Bison relay team set another team record in as many weeks. Senior Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.), juniors Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.) and freshman DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:32.47. The record is two seconds faster than the old mark (3:34.25) set in 2009. McGowan was part of both relay teams. Bennett, Burton and McGowan along with senior Kyle Sexton (Peoria, Ill.) set a team record in the 200 freestyle relay on December 3.
Gallaudet won 10 of the 11 events as Salem, a Division II program, won the 100-yard freestyle.
Bennett won the 100-yard butterfly (59.62 seconds) and was part of the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:50.11) along with Everton-Lovell, Sexton and McGowan. Everton-Lovell also was first in the 200 freestyle (2:02.20) while McGowan won the 50 freestyle in 23.66 seconds. Sexton was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:47.37) and second in the 100 freestyle (56.34 seconds).
Sophomore Kailob Miller (Ardmore, Okla.) was first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:52.38 and freshman Richard Zabelski (Saginaw, Mich.) won the 1,650 freestyle (27:02.56). Two other new faces won events on Saturday as sophomores Steven Jeczala (Spokane, Wash.) and Jacob Klenk (Westerville, Ohio) won their respective events. Jeczala was first in the 500 freestyle (9:34.77) while Klenk won the 100 backstroke in 1:19.15.
The swim program is off until the New Year when the Bison will next dive into the pool on Saturday, January 22, in Frederick, Md., against Hood College at 1 p.m. GU will next be at home on Sunday, January 23, against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe College of Saint Elizabeth at 1 p.m.
