Men's swimming relay sets new team program record as Bennett wins two events

YORK, Pa. – It was a split outcome for the Gallaudet University men’s swimming team on Friday night in York, Pa., in a non-conference double dual meet. The Bison defeated Penn St.-Altoona 110-89 while it dropped a 156-49 match to the host Spartans of York (Pa.) College. Gallaudet is now 3-3 this season.

Junior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won two events to pace the Bison. Bennett was the first to touch the wall in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.93) while he took first honors in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.19).

It was a record breaking performance by the Gallaudet 200-yard freestyle relay team that set a new program record with a time of 1:36.25. The Bison on that team include Bennett, senior Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.), senior Kyle Sexton (Peoria, Ill.) and James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.).

York rolled through the double dual meet as the Spartans won nine of the 11 men’s events. The Spartans swept the first three spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle while the Bison finished in the next three spots to give them a sweep over Penn St.-Altoona.

Freshman DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) finished second overall in the 100-yard backstroke (59.39 seconds). The rookie finished second to Penn St.-Altoona and third to York (Pa.) in several categories including the 200 IM (2:16.30) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.15).

McGowan and Burton finished first and second against Penn St.-Altoona in the 100-yard freestyle while McGowan finished third overall in the 50-freestyle.

Gallaudet (3-3) will host Salem International University from West Virginia on Saturday, December 11, at 1 p.m.
