Bison Open 2009 Season with Tri-Meet

The Gallaudet Track and Field team began their 2009 season Saturday with a tri-meet against Hood College and Montgomery College. The meet, held in Rockville, Maryland was run under conditions expected for a February weekend in Maryland.  However, Bison athletes looked past the weather and set the tone for the season with a very successful competition.

Gallaudet started out with a strong placing in the field events. Seniors Kari Olney and Matthew Schindel led by example as they both won the javelin competition. Schindel had a winning throw of 130’ 9” and Olney won with a toss of 76’ 0”.  Erin Phillips won the triple jump and was 3rd in the long jump. Greg Frey was second in the mens’ long jump with a leap of 18’ 1”.

The Bison also showed that they can also be competitive in the running events.  Olney won the 1500 meter run in a time of 5:38, followed closely by newcomer Virginia Keeler.  Keeler also went on to win the 800 meter run, while Olney placed 2nd in the 3200 meter run. Phillips won the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.95.

On the men’s side, the Bison were led by a number of freshmen competing for the first time at the collegiate level.  Brady Painter  opened his hurdling career by placing 2nd in the 110 meter high hurdles (16.38) and 3rd in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles (1:08).  Freshman Jacob Schlotthauer  placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash.  Frey and Schotthauer both placed in the 100 meter dash as well; 2nd and 4th respectively.

Gallaudet track and field will next compete in the Salisbury University Opener on Saturday in Salisbury, Maryland.
