CAC Selects Kari Olney as Athlete of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Stevenson junior MATT LUKEHART (Bel Air, Md./Mt. Carmel), Wesley senior ANDREW SMYTH (Delran, N.J./Delran), York junior STEVE COLLISON (Westville, N.J./Woodbury), Mary Washington senior BECKY MORSE-KARZEN (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), Salisbury Jr. BRANDON FUGETT (Randallstown, Md./Cardinal Gibbons), York Fr. DARREN McKOY (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph), Gallaudet senior KARI OLNEY (Riverside, Calif./California School F/T Deaf) and Mary Washington senior MAE WINCHESTER (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) were selected as the Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for March 31, 2009.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Gallaudet senior KARI OLNEY (Riverside, Calif./California School F/T Deaf) and Mary Washington senior MAE WINCHESTER (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) were named the CAC Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for double gold-medal performances at the Battleground Relays at the University of Mary Washington. Olney captured top honors in a pair of distance races - the 3,000-meter run (11;33.51) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:45.50) - and added a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (21:28.90) to lead the Bison. Winchester outdueled the competition in the hurdles, taking the gold in the 100 (15.33) and 400 (1:05.03) prior to anchoring the UMW 4x400 relay team (4:05.79). 

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Salisbury Jr. BRANDON FUGETT (Randallstown, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) and York Fr. DARREN McKOY (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) were named the CAC Men's Track & Field Co-Athletes of the Week. Fugett broke his own school record, set just a week ago, with a second-place finish in the shot put (15.8 m; 51-10) and provisionally qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships with a 47.48m (155-9) gold medal performance in the discus at the Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland. McKoy anchored York's school-record 4x100 relay team that placed second overall (42.91) and had the fastest trials time (11.36) in the 100-meter dash before registering a second-place finish in the finals with an 11.30 effort.  He also helped the 4x200 relay team and the sprint medley relay teams to silver medal performances.
