Gallaudet women's basketball team holds clinic for Girl Scout Troop 758
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team held a clinic for Girl Scout Troop 758 from Woodbridge, Va., on Friday, April 8, at the Field House. The 90-minute clinic featured the Bison players teaching basic basketball skills to the troops of five girls to help them earn their sports fitness badge.
"This was a great experience for all involved," said Gallaudet graduate assistant coach Stephanie Stevens. "This is good for the players, good for the girl scouts because this helps them with their badge. Plus, this is good for the athletics program because hopefully these girls will come out to support us in the future."
The troop's leaders Octavia Davis and Veronica Curtis echoed the same sentiments.
"This was better than I imagined. It was very empowering for our girls to be learning basketball from college level athletes," said Davis. "Coach Stephanie had all the girls feeling like suiting up to play some organized basketball when we left. The women on the team were very attentive and after all the success they had this year this seemed like it was the most important thing in the world to them."
All-conference center Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) was one of the many Bison on hand to work with the girl scouts and tried to drive home this important message. "The earlier you touch the ball the better you will get."
The five girl scouts in attendance included; Alana Davis, Kailyn Curtis, Chraykee Washington, Brooklynn Thomas and Trinity Harvey.
