Gallaudet women's basketball receive bid to 2011 NCAA Division III tournament
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The magical season for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team will extend for another week as the Bison learned Monday their postseason fate as the official 2011 NCAA Division III tournament field was announced. Gallaudet (24-3) was selected as one of the 20 at-large bids and will travel to Huntingdon, Pa., to face Juniata College (21-6) on Friday, March 4, in the first round at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center. The game time has not been set yet. The winner of the Gallaudet-Juniata game will face the winner between Greensboro College (26-2) and Saint Vincent College (24-4) on Saturday in the second round.
Gallaudet will make its third NCAA tournament appearance in the program's history and the first in 12 years. The previous two appearances came in 1997 and '99. The 1999 run saw the Bison win two games and advance to the Sweet 16. GU is 2-2 all-time in the NCAA tournament. The Bison are led by North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.), fellow senior center Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.), who was an all-conference second team selection this season. GU started the season with a 20-game winning streak, the best in program history, and finished the regular-season as co-champions with Keuka College with 20-2 NEAC records. Keuka defeated Gallaudet 50-46 yesterday in the NEAC championship game in the Field House. The Bison have tied the program record for wins in a season with 24 matching the mark set by the 1998-99 team.
Juniata received its third NCAA tournament bid after the Eagles won the Landmark Conference championship for the first-time. The Eagles are led by all-conference first team forward Jen Hnatuck, a Tri-Player of the Year honoree, along with second team selection Ashton Bankos and forward Kate McDonald, who was also Rookie of the Year.
Ticket Information from Juniata
General admission for tickets will cost $6.00. Tickets will cost $3.00 for senior citizens ages 62 and up, students with student identification, and children under ten years old. Children under two years of age will be able to enter the game at no cost.
