Gallaudet to host annual pink game this Saturday at Field House to support WBCA's Play 4Kay

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Once again Gallaudet University will proudly be participating in the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "Play 4Kay" initiative on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the women's basketball team hosts North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe College of St. Elizabeth at the Field House. Tip-off will be at 1 p.m. and all fans are encouraged to wear something pink to show their support.

Play 4Kay will be occurring nationwide from Feb. 10-20, the purpose of which is to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4Kay after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and later passed away on Jan. 24, 2009.

The WBCA's Play 4Kay, formerly known as the Pink Zone in previous years, was rebranded to keep the story and legacy of Kay Yow at the forefront of everything the fund commits itself to.

Since the initiative began in 2007, the WBCA has raised over $4.5million for cancer research and attracted millions of fans and thousands of participants.

WBCA Play 4Kay
The WBCA began Play 4Kay (Pink Zone) in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Yow, who had begun her third battle with breast cancer in 2006, had a vision encompassing not only her wish to fund cancer research but also her desire for coaches to enrich their lives by serving others.

In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. In 2010, over 1,800 participants came together to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached more than 922,000 fans across the nation. Over 22 schools broke attendance records through their participation. And in 2011, more than 1,300 teams and individuals participated to raise over $650,000. Overall, the WBCA has raised nearly $4 million and has unified more than 6,000 participants in only five years. The WBCA's goal for 2012 is to once again surpass the $1million in donations.
