Coach Stern earns first win as Bison defeat D'Youville in Holiday Tournament consolation game
WASHINGTON, D.C. – First-year head coach Brendan Stern earned his first collegiate victory Sunday as Gallaudet University defeated D'Youville College, 66-59, in the GU Holiday Tournament women's basketball consolation game at the Field House.
Sophomore guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) led all scorers with 21 points, added six assists to lead the Bison (1-3). Latham made several clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve GU's lead over the Spartans (1-5). Freshman forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) had 14 points and led the Bison with seven rebounds. Freshman guard Bianca Richards-Hamilton (Mesa, Ariz.) was very active on defense as she led the Bison with four steals, tallied eight points and five rebounds.
The game was tightly contested most of the way. The two teams went back and forth during the first half and headed into the locker room with the score knotted at 31.
Although the game remained competitive throughout, GU took the early 34-33 second-half lead and would never trail again, gradually stretching the margin out to nine, 48-39, and maintained the lead en route to the seven-point victory.
Hannah Norton was a force down low for the Spartans, tallying 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Kellie Burns, who finished with eight assists, consistently fed Norton the ball down in the post.
GU converted 15 of 20 free throw opportunities, while the Spartans made five of nine attempts. Gallaudet also won the turnover battle, limiting themselves to eight while forcing 23 D'Youville turnovers.
The Bison lost to Valley Forge Christian College (2-6) 55-40 in their opening game on Saturday. Valley Forge then fell to Lehman College (3-3) in the championship game by four, 67-63.
Following the championship game, plaques were distributed and the All-Tournament team was announced. Latham was GU's representative and Norton for D'Youville. From Valley Forge, juniors Kaitlyn Antolic and Amanda Reich were named to the team. The champion Lehman Lightning had Leslie Mencia, as well as tournament MVP Amanda de la Cruz
The Bison will next face Lancaster Bible College on Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Field House to open North Eastern Athletic Conference play at 7 p.m.
