Gallaudet shuts out Washington Adventist in season opener, 3-0

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Sophomore forward Shaq McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) scored two goals in the opening five minutes to lead the Gallaudet University women’s soccer team to a 3-0 season opening victory over Washington Adventist University on the road Sunday.

McDonough wasted little time as she knocked in a slow roller 38 seconds into the game. Minutes later, the swift and shifty forward beat the Shock defense and caught goalie Lucia Cortes (eight saves) looking with her second goal of the game.

The score remained 2-0 for the majority of the first half but in the 41st minute senior midfielder Virginia Keeler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored an unassisted goal with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to send the Bison into halftime up 3-0.

Gallaudet (1-0) outshot Washington Adventist 11-7 in the first half and held a one shot advantage, 19-18, at the end of the game. The Shock (1-1) took six corner kicks, two more then the Bison.

Sophomore goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) made seven saves in the game as she recorded the shutout. Last year, Gulvas and the Bison had three shutouts for the entire season.

Gallaudet avenges an opening 4-1 loss handed to them by Washington Adventist last year. The two teams split their season series as the Bison won 3-2 later in 2009.

GU will next make its home debut on Friday, September 10, as the Bison welcome the College of Notre Dame (Md.) to Hotchkiss Field for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
