Bison women's soccer scores two goals but is outdone by Baynton's hat trick

SALEM, W.Va. – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team battled back, down 2-0 early, to tie the game Wednesday before falling in the final five minutes on the road against Salem International University, 3-2.

Gallaudet (2-14) dug an early hole when Salem International's Jessica Baynton (three goals) scored two goals in the first seven minutes of play. The Bison responded with a goal from freshman Katie Benz (Stafford, Va.) off an assist from junior Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.) at the eight minute mark. Benz and Arrigo would switch roles in the 30th minute when Benz passed the ball to Arrigo, who deposited it in the back of the Tigers' goal. The two teams went into halftime tied 2-2.

Salem International (4-10), a Division II school, took the lead in the final minutes when Baynton scored an unassisted goal in the 85th minute with her third goal past senior goalie Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.).

The Tigers outshot the Bison 17-12 and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. McCullough finished the game with five saves.

GU will conclude its 2011 season on Saturday, October 29, at home against NEAC foe Penn St.-Abington at 2 p.m.
