GU women's soccer finds the back of the net twice against SUNYIT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It has been a month since the Gallaudet University women's soccer team took to Hotchkiss Field for a home game. The Bison were greeted Saturday afternoon with an unseasonable cold and wet day as they welcomed SUNYIT for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game. Gallaudet scored the game's first and last goals as it made a strong showing against the Wildcats, who came away with a 4-2 win.

Gallaudet (0-8, 0-4 NEAC) scored two goals, a season-high, to match the goal total scored by the Bison in their first seven games. Junior midfielder Maggie Hoyt (Edgecomb, Maine) scored an early goal in the third minute, a shot from the center of the field that snuck past SUNYIT goalkeeper Margaret Werenczak (one save) into the corner of the net. The goal was the first for GU in five games, snapping a streak of 391 minutes held scoreless, and the first at home this season.

The Bison held the 1-0 lead for the majority of the first half until Wildcat forward Nicole DiNitto evened the score in the 42nd minute, with a high goal over the outstretched arms of GU goalkeeper Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.).

In the second half, the Wildcats scored in the 50th and 74th minutes, as they capitalized on several fast break scoring chances against the Bison. SUNYIT (5-6, 4-2 NEAC) then extended its lead to 4-1 at the 85th minute on a penalty kick goal scored by Werenczak. The penalty was caused by a handball deep in the Gallaudet zone. However, the Bison kept fighting throughout, and junior midfielder Maddie Morgan (Hockessin, Del.) broke through in the final minute of the game with a free-kick goal that sailed in from 20 yards out.

SUNYIT outshot Gallaudet 20-3 and took 10 corner kicks. McCullough saved 13 shots to keep it close for most of the game. Besides the two Bison goal scorers, sophomore forward Lauren Hostovsky (Medfield, Mass.) added a shot on goal as well.

GU is home again tomorrow (Sunday, October 2) to face SUNY Cobleskill in a NEAC game at Hotchkiss Field at 2 p.m.
