Gallaudet suffers first loss of the season

BALTIMORE – The Gallaudet University volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2010 season on Wednesday night in Baltimore to the hands of Johns Hopkins University, 3-1, at Goldfarb Gym. The loss snaps a seven-match winning streak dating back to last year's Capital Athletic Conference championship game.

Johns Hopkins (2-2) jumped to an early lead as the Blue Jays won the first two sets 25-18 and 27-25. The Bison (4-1) were able to stave off a sweep when they took the third set 25-19. JHU bounced back and closed out the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set.

Junior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) led the way with 35 assists, 14 digs, seven kills and two service aces. Sophomore Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) had a double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs and so did fellow sophomore Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) who finished with 13 kills and 14 digs. Junior libero Micaela Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) added 20 digs in the loss.

GU will next travel to Frostburg, Md., on Friday, September 10, to participate in the Frostburg State University Invitational. The Bison will face Geneva, Susquehanna and Marietta during the two-day invitational.
